Jibamitra “Jiba” Ganguly: Professor Emeritus, Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona
Wednesday November 5, 2025,
3:00pm – 4:00pm,
ASA Great Room and Zoom
In this talk Jiba Ganguly will provide a brief overview of the interior of the Earth and the theory of Plate Tectonics. This will be followed by showing the connection between subduction of oceanic plates and earthquakes; how thermal and phase equilibrium modeling of plates help explain the volcanism known as the Pacific Ring of Fire and the development of copper deposits in Arizona and elsewhere in the Pacific rim. He will also briefly discuss the forces that drive and resist subduction of oceanic plates, stagnation of some plates at the boundary between upper and lowermantle of the Earth (~660 km depth), and how dissolution of water in nominally anhydrous minerals in Earth’s mantle might promote further subduction of a plate, and return it as a plume from the core-mantle boundary of the Earth.
