In his book At Home With Dying, A Zen Hospice Approach, Merrill Collett integrates Eastern wisdom and Zen teachings to foster a compassionate and heart-centered approach to dying. During this discussion, however, Merritt will emphasize the idea that perhaps the most mysterious paradox of being alive is that cultivating an awareness of death helps us live more expansively. It opens a wider perspective that enables us to view aging on a personal level, very different from how society sees it, how the movies portray it, how science considers it, or how our friends and family may view it. He wants each of us to engage with the aging process intimately and personally, resulting in a life well lived and transforming end of life, a potentially frightening experience, into a deeply meaningful one.
