Caleb Simmons: Executive Director of Online Education, University of Arizona

Wednesday, May 8, 2024,

2:30pm – 3:30pm,

ASA Koffler Great Room and Zoom

Have you ever been curious about furthering your learning through online education? Arizona Online allows you to attend the University of Arizona and learn from the same professors, enjoy the same resources, and earn (if you like) the same degree as students attending in-person. If you’re curious and want to know more, don’t miss Caleb Simmons’s talk at the ASA.

Caleb Simmons, the Executive Director of Online Education at the University of Arizona, will discuss the history of online education at the university and beyond, and how it is shaping education for the future. He will discuss how online education, like Arizona Online, provides rigorous education while providing access to those for whom a college education might otherwise be unachievable. It also makes lifelong learning in a university setting possible for post-traditional (and retired) learners. For example, the average age of Arizona Online students is 32 years old, so peer-to-peer discussions often reflect more lived experience than traditional university courses.

In addition to directing Arizona Online, Caleb Simmons serves as Professor of Religious Studies, and Faculty Director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. His current research focuses on online and digital learning, student learning outcomes, and cost-benefit in higher education. He was named a Center for University Education Scholarship (CUES) Distinguished Fellow for his research on online pedagogy. In his role as a faculty member, his research focuses on South Asian history, and he is the author of the following academic monographs:  Devotional Sovereignty: Kingship and Religion in India (Oxford University Press, 2020), and Singing the Goddess into Place (SUNY Press, 2022).e was nameda HH
