It’s the early 1900s in Paris, and the art world is on the verge of a seismic shift, with Picasso and Matisse at the center of it. In this second session, presented by Academy Village resident Dr. Deborah Robin, you’ll learn what drove these two extraordinary personalities and how their fierce rivalry fueled their creativity. You’ll see how the two revolutionary art movements took modern art from its infancy into full revolution. You’ll understand why Picasso shattered traditional perspective with Cubism, fracturing familiar objects into geometric forms and reassembling them in startling new ways. Then, discover how Matisse liberated color with Fauvism, using bold, untamed hues that earned his group the nickname “wild beasts.” Hearing background stories and seeing their masterpieces, you’ll know how to interpret and appreciate these modern art styles.
