Today, one must be constantly be on guard when answering the phone or responding to email or texting, as scammers are continuously inventing new ways of getting us to provide personal or financial information so they can gain access to our accounts or even steal our identity.
Brian Watson is about to help us by sharing insights, stories, and experiences from his law enforcement career plus what he has learned so far in the non-profit world. He’ll identify the latest scams and show how most scams follow the same basic pattern, providing recent, real-life examples of victims who fell prey to various financial scams. One age group is the least likely to report being victimized. Finally, he’ll provide resources and common-sense advice that can be used to protect yourself, family, and friends.
Brian spent 28 years in Federal law enforcement investigating financial crimes as a Special Agent with IRS Criminal Investigation. His primary collateral duty was being a Public Information Officer, warning the public about financial related scams. He retired in 2023 and is now a Community Outreach Specialist for the non-profit Resources/Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly (R.O.S.E.). In addition to the non-profit job, Brian is currently teaching a course at the University of Arizona titled “White Collar Crime.” Brian and his family have lived in Oro Valley almost 20 years. He enjoys hiking, backpacking, and exploring the State of Arizona.
