Bob Pape will introduce us to the amazing behavior of deep cave-nesting spider wasp populations that are right in our own back yard, at Colossal Cave Mountain Park. These remarkable animals are the only spider wasps in the world known to nest deep within caves. Studies conducted over 30 years revealed many insights into the behavior of these wasps in addition to their nesting deep within limestone caves. More insights include intraspecific and interspecific competition; plasticity in host selection; precision solar navigation; evidence that some form of communal nesting may be present (unusual in spider wasps); and behavior suggestive of rudimentary cognition. Find out all about this fascinating creature without the fear of even one sting.
