What is the difference between palliative care and hospice care? They are both for pain and symptom relief, but the prognosis and goals are different. We can think of palliative care as an umbrella, under which hospice care falls. A key point to understand is “curative options,” which can signal when a person moves from palliative care to hospice care.An experienced hospice nurse/chaplain will give the “nitty gritty’ on who, what, when where and how.
Dr. Ondrejka has many years of experience in a host of areas, and is best known for being a university professor, research methodologist, an author, and curriculum developer for Master of Nursing Students in the United States and Vietnam.
In recent years, Dr. Ondrejka expanded his practice into geriatrics and hospice care as a spiritual support professional. He left retirement to work with the dying and their families as a clinician and has written a chapter on Teaching and Communication with Older Adults and their Families in Dr. Mauk’s (2023) book, Geriatric Nursing: Competencies for Care. His chapter focuses on the aging process and how this can impact cognition and the various forms of dementia and physical changes in older adults. He also created discussions with families to support them on knowing when to move a loved one from palliative care to hospice care. He has done extensive group grief counseling for families.
