Arizona is a state with a very active and legally powerful ballot initiative system. While out and about we are often approached and solicited for signatures proposing measures to help fund education, change an election process, or repeal some law passed by the state legislature. Sometimes the initiatives that do qualify to reach the official ballot are difficult to understand—“yes” may effectively mean “no,” or vice versa.
Cindy Soffrin, a retired fiduciary accountant who now volunteers with the League of Women Voters, will explain how the Arizona initiative process works and review the various proposals for which Pima County will vote in November.
Cindy Soffrin moved to Tucson about nine years ago from the Washington, DC, suburbs where she was born and raised. She earned her BS in Accounting at the University of Maryland College Park and worked initially in the audit department of the Washington DC office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (predecessor of KPMG). Her final position before retirement was in the Estates and Trust Department of the Washington DC office of a large international law firm.
Joining and participating in the League of Women Voters was always on Cindy’s retirement bucket list. Joining soon after moving to Arizona, she began participating in her local unit meetings geared to political and voter education. The LWV Speaker’s Bureau intrigued her as an opportunity to share what she had learned about the various topics the group researched.
In her spare time, Cindy enjoys gardening, reading, yoga and tap dancing. She is a member of a senior tap/jazz dance group (The Rodeo City Wreckettes) and has recently taken up playing Pickleball.
