Calling all Academy Villagers and neighbors!  You cannot afford to miss this important panel discussion that will answer important questions about our groundwater supplies.  This panel is going to answer some critical questions we’ve been asking for some time:

  • What are the basic principles and hydrology of the aquifer that supplies groundwater for this area?
  • What is an Assured Water Supply in this area of the Tucson Active Management Area?
  • How is it certified by the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District?
  • How does the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District procure renewable surface water such as Central Arizona Project water?
  • Where does this replenishment occur?
  • What does the data show about our water usage in at Academy Village?

Background of panelists:

Sarah Porter is Director of the Kyl Center for Water Policy at Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy and serves on the Governor’s Water Policy Council. Porter received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and her juris doctor from Arizona State University.

Laura Grignano is Central Arizona Project’s Manager of the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District (CAGRD). Ms. Grignano received her Bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and her Masters from the College of William and Mary.

Chris Brooks is a Senior Policy Analyst for the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District (part of the Central Arizona Project), where his work since 2014 has focused on acquiring and developing renewable water supplies to meet the replenishment obligations of CAGRD. Prior to joining CAP he worked as a consultant and water policy advisor for over 20 years. He has a B.S. in Hydrology and a J.D. from the University of Arizona.

Denice Smith, a resident of The Academy Village (TAV), has since returning to Arizona in 2019 found a new passion in studying Arizona water issues, including use of water harvesting to reduce dependence on groundwater. Smith, born and raised in Tucson, has a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Dartmouth College.

Norm Scott, also a resident of The Academy Village, Chairs the Village’s Sustainability Committee and has assembled key details about the water well serving TAV. He is an Emeritus Professor from Cornell University, Dept. Biological & Environmental Engineering.
