Wildfires are a natural part of many ecosystems across North America. However, suburban expansion, coupled with more extreme and larger wildfires, has increased the threat to human lives and properties. Many communities, including Vail, now fall within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Due to the increasing risk, fire departments and land management agencies are being challenged more than ever with protecting communities within the WUI. Firefighting resources are often stretched thin, and at times it may not be possible to place a fire engine at every home during a wildfire. This presentation will discuss the current wildfire risk in Southern Arizona and give homeowners concrete actions to take to protect their homes and families from wildfire.

Asa Pallette has spent 21 years in the fire and emergency medical service, the last 17 with Rincon Valley Fire District (RVFD). He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2015, and has previously served as the Fire Training Officer for RVFD. He is currently the Wildland Fire Program Coordinator. He is a National Wildfire Coordinating Group qualified Engine Boss, qualified Type 4 Incident Commander, and Strike Team Leader trainee. He has responded to wildfires across the western United States. He has also completed the National Fire Protection Association “Assessing Home Ignition Potential’ curriculum, and is training to be a certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist. Asa holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Agency Service.
