Celia Bavier, Executive Director of the Border Community Alliance (BCA), discusses myths and realities of narratives between the U.S. and Mexico on the southern border. These narratives are largely negative, full of stereotypes and are often inaccurate. Mexico is a beautiful country, is culturally diverse, mostly safe, but has a complex relationship with the U.S. Mexico is our largest trading partner and thus has immense economic influence.
The 2,000-mile border sees hundreds of thousands of border crossings each day as multiple nationalities cross the border to work, attend school, shop, travel and visit family and friends. It is a porous border; towns on both sides are dynamic and represent strong communities that have close ties with those “across the line”.
This lecture focuses on myths and realities about the U.S.-Mexico border and the work that BCA is doing to promote cross-border community, cultural exchanges and social investment
