Chris Eustis was born in Darien, CT. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI with a B.A. in Spanish. He then went on to earn a M.A., also in Spanish, from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT. A few years after spending a year in Spain as an Independent Fulbright Scholar, he received a PhD. in Hispanic Literature from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.

Chris went on to teach Spanish and Portuguese at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. While there, he also served as Department Head and founded and directed the VA Tech Summer Study Abroad Program in Spain and a student exchange program with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, in Quito, Ecuador. He later taught Spanish, Portuguese, and Comparative Literature at Case Western Reserve, University in Cleveland, OH. He then ended his career at the University of Akron, Akron, OH, where he was Professor of Modern Languages and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages. While there, he founded and directed The University of Akron Summer Study Abroad in Spain.

When Chris retired, he and his wife Joanne moved to Charleston, SC, where he became an enthusiastic Coastal Kayaking Instructor for 10 years before relocating to Arizona. Now, having already been on the Academy Village HOA Board for 4 years, Chris brings not only those acquired skills, but credits his years of being Department Chair with his ability to listen to other perspectives and serve as an effective facilitator. Chris and Joanne have lived in Academy Village since April, 2019. He loves it here, and especially loves mountain bike outings where he can enjoy the desert landscape and view the sun and clouds doing their artistic work on our mountains and sky.

Welcome Chris!
