Segno and Val de Non

Bernd Brand will show how Padre Kino was well prepared for his later missionary work in the New World by his early experiences in Segno, Italy where he was born. Padre Kino, born Eusevio Francesco Chini, spent his youth in an agrarian community which exposed him to working with his hands, learning how to grow fruits and vegetables, raising farm animals, and riding horses.  During his pre-college years, he attended a Jesuit school where his scholarship developed, and he exhibited talent in mathematics and natural sciences which later shaped his interest in exploration and cartography.

After attending seven different universities studying a variety of sciences, he received his doctorate. His recovery from a near fatal illness during his college years, spurred his commitment to the Jesuits and missionary work.
