March is Colorectal Cancer Prevention Month, a disease that is estimated to develop in 160,000 Americans this year and is the second leading cause for cancer deaths. Through screening, colon cancer can be almost 100% preventable. In this presentation Dr. Steve Erdman will review the basic genetic mechanisms of sporadic correctal cancer which arises from gradual, lifetime genetic damage– and inherited colorectal cancer which begins with a built-in genetic vulnerability that accelerates cancer development. He’ll explain the changing natural history and presenting symptoms of the disease. Screening options will also be reviewed with a focus on what you can do as a patient to improve the accuracy and detection rate of your screening procedures.
