The study of the many ways food affects the body falls under the big umbrella called integrative medicine. Mari Ricker’s presentation explores the growing “Food is Medicine” movement, defining key concepts such as food as medicine and culinary medicine. She’ll explain their relevance to both academic medicine (a branch of healthcare practice which combines clinical care, research, and education) and integrative medicine (which combines conventional medical therapies with complementary and alternative medicine modalities). She’ll examine how evidence-based nutrition and hands-on culinary education can transform patient care, enhance prevention, and address chronic disease. The session will also highlight the critical importance of incorporating this training into undergraduate and graduate medical education, ensuring future healthcare professionals are equipped to integrate nutrition and lifestyle into whole-person care.
