Tubac’s Anza Days celebrates the 1775-1776 journey of Juan Bautista de Anza, who led an expedition from Tubac to establish the first non-native settlement at San Francisco Bay. Alex La Pierre’s presentation explores the life and legacy of this Spanish frontier soldier, delving into his origins and the challenges he faced in Northern New Spain, now the American Southwest. In 1774, Juan Bautista de Anza was preparing to leave Tubac Presidio, just southwest of Tucson, on an expedition to California approved by the king of Spain. Learn about the incredible journey of nearly 250 people and 1,000 head of livestock who traveled over 1,500 miles through some of the most arid and dangerous terrain in North America to establish the Alta California outpost.
