Bella Vivante: Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Classics, University of Arizona

2:30pm – 3:30pm,

ASA Koffler Great Room and Zoom

The Greek poet Homer’s two great epics The Iliad and The Odyssey have inspired almost 3000 years of creative works. Inheriting this rich literary legacy, the last three decades have seen twice as many works of fiction inspired by these ancient tales penned by women authors as by men. This talk will explore this interesting phenomenon. Bella Vivante will survey the themes of some of these novels—many award-winning–and highlight what makes them distinctive. And she will explore what it is about these ancient tales that so fascinates female authors today. She hopes this will be an enlightening experience for all.
