Jennifer Wishnie, DVM, MSC, MPH, DACVPM: Associated Professor and Director, One Health/Veterinary Public Health Residency Program, University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine

Wednesday, February 11, 2026, 3:00-4:00 pm, Koffler Great Room at ASA and zoom

You may be considering pet ownership for a number of reasons, perhaps because you desire companionship or for the pleasure of, and teaching responsibility to, children in your family. For many, however, pets are already an integral part of your family. Dr. Wishnie would like to introduce a factor in pet ownership that you may not have considered before. She wants to point out the realities and risks of getting sick from a pet?  She will discuss both the benefits and potential risks of pet ownership, provide an introduction to zoonotic diseases—those that can be transmitted between animals and humans—explore the question, “What does owning a pet mean for my family’s health?”, and highlight the One Health perspective that connects human, animal, and environmental health.
