Apache scouts served and are remembered as highly effective U.S. Army personnel, primarily as expert trackers and guides during the Indian Wars. Their deep knowledge of the American Southwest and their exceptional tracking abilities and knowledge of the terrain made them crucial to campaigns against hostile Apache groups. Although their contributions to the U.S. Army were significant in the conquest and settlement of the Southwest, their service was viewed with complexity and controversy, as they were sometimes forced to fight against their own people. Many joined out of a need for survival amidst the pressures of reservation life and shifting alliances. After the major Apache resistance ended, the need for Apache scouts decreased significantly. and their long history of service ended in 1947.
