3:00-4:00 pm,

Koffler Great Room at ASA and zoom

Biodiversity is the diversity of life. In his talk, Dr. Wiens will discuss how many species are known on Earth and how many there may be in the future. Many new species continue to be discovered every year, and the fastest rates of species discovery ever have been in the last few years. He will also talk about the loss of biodiversity, including the rates and causes of recent extinctions of plants and animals, and the current and future impacts of climate change. Even though hundreds of species have gone extinct over the last 500 years and thousands more are now threatened, there is no strong evidence for a current Sixth Mass Extinction. He will finish by talking about his department’s work on the impacts of climate change on Sky Island lizards in southeastern Arizona.
