ASA Koffler Great Room and Zoom
Ron Bridgemon, a resident of both Tucson and Mata Ortiz, will present a general introduction to the pottery of Mata Ortiz, a remote village in Chihuahua, Mexico. This village, which consists of about 1200 residents, has 500 ceramic artists, many of whom are still active cowboys. The ceramic artists were originally inspired in the late 1970s by pottery shards from the World Heritage site of Paquime in Casa Grandes, Mexico. The Mata Ortiz potters produce what has been called the finest art pottery in the world. Ron will describe and illustrate Mata Ortiz pottery.
Ron Bridgemon has been exploring and studying caves around the world for many years. With his wife Sue, he has been leading trips to Mata Ortiz since 1996 and built a house there in 2001. He’s one of the authors of The Magnetism of Mata Ortiz: Places, People, and Pottery. The past president of the Cave Research Foundation, he led the group that did the environmental study of Kartchner Cavern for the State of Arizona. Sue’s been a long-time docent at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Ron is the former director of the state crime lab in Tucson.
