Meet Bill McCourt, ASA Board Member, AV Resident
By Celeste Scholz
Bill McCourt moved to Academy Village from Bellingham, Washington, with his wife, Judy, in 2011—fifteen years ago. With a degree in environmental studies, Bill began working in water treatment and sanitation for the city of Bellingham, first as an operator, then supervisor, and finally as Superintendent of Water and Sewer. After 32 years Bill retired, and went on to manage the water and sewer for the Lummi Nation for 7 years.
Bill is dedicated to public service and as a top technical person, he was able to affect change by strengthening and managing facilities, through defining models and budgeting resources efficiently. It is these skills that Bill brings to Academy Village.
Bill’s experience in 501c3 organizations is extensive. In addition to joining our HOA board in 2025, he has been a member of eight other boards and was the president of the three of them. These boards include Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, RE Sources, and the Ferndale Dollars for Scholars as a founding member.
Bill is an avid cyclist who has completed many famous bike routes, including the Northern, Southern, East Coast, and West Coast Tiers and the TransAmerica. He volunteers more than 100 hours each year with the National Park Bike Patrol at Saguaro National Park East. At Academy Village, he participates in cactus rescues and leads workshops that teach villagers how to grow saguaros from seed. For a special treat, Bill’s favorite restaurant is Wild Garlic, and he also enjoys Mexican food at the Guadalajara Grill. Bill feels Academy Village really stands out for its strong sense of community and volunteer spirit—people truly show up!
