Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. Its diagnosis changes the lives of the person, family members, and close friends, raising difficult questions and affecting interpersonal dynamics. At the same time, recent advances have led to much earlier diagnosis, including diagnosis in those who remain cognitively unimpaired, so meeting friends and neighbors who are living with the disease while remaining active in our communities is becoming increasingly common. Marisa Menchola and Lucy Wilson’s presentation will cover professional and personal aspects of the complex decisions about whether and when to seek evaluation and diagnosis, what treatment and care options to pursue, how to nurture relationships with those living with the disease, and how to develop dementia-inclusive communities.
