ASA Great Room and Zoom

Dr. Arizmendi highlights how studying bilingualism reshapes what we know about the brain, language development, and the role of professions like speech-language pathology (SLP). She explains that both languages in a bilingual person are active at the same time, which not only affects communication but also strengthens skills like attention and multitasking. This constant management of two languages changes the brain’s structure and can protect it as we age, delaying conditions like dementia. At the same time, Dr. Arizmendi will connect these findings to child language development and to SLP, emphasizing that bilingualism does not cause confusion or delays, but instead reflects the brain’s flexibility. In sum, this talk blends science with daily experiences, showing how research on bilingualism can shape better understanding, teaching, and support for multilingual communities.
