Dancer/choreographer Billbob Brown reflects on the nature of TIME, MEMORY, and THE BODY, with performances of his very funny dances “Once Upon a…” and “Space Cowboy: El Final Frontier,” with his dance partner Sherry Mulholland, who is director of Tucson’s Funhouse movement theatre. Does time necessarily “flow forward”? How does the body itself store memories? Is there really such a thing as “now,” and when exactly are we getting some time off? Will that include overtime?
Billbob Brown received his BFA in Dance from ASU, and MA in Dance History from UNM. He was the founding director of Desert Dance Theatre in Phoenix, now in its 46th year; he was professor and program director at UMass Amherst for many years, and chair of dance at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. “Opening Doors,” a PBS special about his work with Buen Viaje Dancers, a group of people with disabilities, received an Emmy; he’s choreographed commercials for Molson-Canadian Beer and the Chicago Cubs, choreographed a Mass for Pope John Paul II, and toured internationally with the Bill Evans Dance Company.
Billbob is the director of Chaos Theory Dance, whose work is built upon the balance between spontaneous improvisation vs. highly choreographed detail. It is often based on aspects of science or current events, using humor, spoken word, video, complex sound scores, and animation, to engage audiences through laughter, thrills, and emotional resonance. With his company and others, Billbob has performed or taught in Japan, China, Switzerland, Great Britain, Hong Kong, throughout Mexico, and given performance residencies at many colleges and universities, including Harvard, MIT, Roger Williams University, and many others. Billbob now resides in Tucson, where he no longer dances barefoot outside.
