Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older, with one in three over 65 experiencing a fall each year. Falls are a major global health concern, with extensive research dedicated to understanding their causes, particularly in the context of slips and trips. While most studies have focused on lower-body strength as the primary musculoskeletal strategy for fall prevention, far less attention has been given to the role of the arms in maintaining balance and recovery. Dr. Lee-Confer’s presentation will explore the latest research on upper-body responses during slip incidents, their implications for physical therapy, and the future directions for integrating arm mechanics into fall prevention strategies.
