In the past fifty years, women artists have risen from anonymity to prominence in European and American art history. Their status in museum collections, in the commercial art market and in academia has also changed dramatically. This illustrated talk will survey fourteen women artists from the 17th to 21st centuries, exploring the changing conditions under which they worked and the ways in which their work has been reevaluated in contemporary discourse.
Tim Schiffer is a resident of Academy Village. He moved to Tucson from Davenport, Iowa, where he was Executive Director of the Figge Art Museum. He was also Executive Director of the Museum of Ventura County in Ventura, California, and was a Lecturer and Gallery Director in the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his BA in Art from Yale and his MFA in Painting from UCSB, and is a practicing artist. His website is www.timschiffer.com.
