The Arizona Senior Academy Building
The Arizona Senior Academy is pleased to preview the 2019-20 Arizona Opera season with a concert by the current Arizona Opera Studio Artists, performing arias, duets and ensembles from the upcoming season.
The Studio Artists perform on both the Main Stage and throughout Arizona while receiving well-rounded, personalized instruction that propels each artist to the next level. Newcomers this season are baritone Rob McGinness and pianist/coach Robert Bosworth. Returning for their second year are sopranos Cadie Jordan and Kaitlyn Johnson, mezzo-soprano Katherine Beck, tenor Bille Bruley, and bass-baritone Brandon Morales.
The 2019-20 season begins October 5th in Tucson with the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s Shining Brow, a compelling tale of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early time in his Arizona home, “Taliesin West,” involving a love affair, murders, and a devastating fire at Taliesin, WI.
Gregory Spears’ Fellow Travelers is set during the McCarthy-era “Lavender Scare,” when homosexual government employees were forced out of their jobs based on their sexuality. This ode to the bravery it takes to stand up to oppression features a handsome US State Department official who struggles to reconcile his political convictions with his “forbidden love.”
The season continues in February with La Boheme. Puccini’s timeless masterpiece will thrill you with its sweeping melodies and dramatic love story of Mimi and Rodolfo and their fellow bohemians in the 1830’s.
Craig Bohmler’s Riders of the Purple Sage, which had its world premiere in 2017, is an adaptation of Zane Grey’s classic story of strength and redemption through love, loss, conflict and adventure across the American Southwest.
The season closes in April with Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, a delightful comedy of errors that delivers a theatrical mix of humor and exceptionally beautiful music.
