Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting online systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. The hackers, as the digital attackers are called, are trying to access and destroy or change sensitive information, extort ransom or interrupt normal business practices.

Since digital interconnectivity is ubiquitous across virtually every social activity in the world, attackers are constantly developing increasingly innovative, sophisticated strategies to access private data.  Consequently, cybersecurity is essential but extremely challenging to stay on top of.

When most people think of cybersecurity they think of corporations, schools, government systems, banks, power plants, transportation and health service networks.

However, just as important is individual cybersecurity.  A personal attack against you or a loved one can wreak havoc in your life. Identity theft, extortion, the loss of important records, maxing out your credit cards and emptying out your bank account are some of the dire consequences you could conceivably be faced with.

As a consumer, you must learn how to protect yourself. You need to sure you understand and know how to comply with and implement basic data security principles. This includes educating yourself on what types of threats are out there, what forms they take and how to respond to them. You need to know how to use digital security tools and practices to protect yourself and your loved ones from computer breaches.

Chief Information Security Officer and Senior Vice President for Provident Bank and Beacon Trust of New Jersey, Nathan Horn-Mitchem, will tell us about various ways hackers steal our data, identity, and money, and give us some tactics we can use to keep ourselves safe.

Nathan graduated from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in 2006

with a Bachelors of Business Administration. He has over 15 years of experience. In his previous job he worked with Goldman-Sachs in a consulting capacity.
