Tuesday, January 29, 11:30 a.m., The Arizona Senior Academy Building
The duo, “Diane Van Deurzen & Lisa Otey,” return to the Arizona Senior Academy for a concert of jazz, blues and boogie woogie. These international touring artists combine their singing voices with Otey’s masterful keyboard playing for rousing and soulful arrangements.
Recently inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame as a duo, Van Deurzen and Otey perform together with easy rapport and emotional connection. They seamlessly alternate solo passages with interweaving vocal lines and 2-part harmonies. Lisa, who has been inducted into the Tucson Music Hall of Fame and the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in her own right, plays a mean boogie woogie piano, but also an evocative lyrical style in ballads and love songs.
Diane and Lisa have co-produced several CDs on their label, Owl’s Nest Productions, including Diane’s I Never Knew, Lisa’s Trio, Bring Your Own Boa (for Lisa Otey and the Desert Divas), and their duo CDs, You Got What I Want, Wild Women and their Christmas hit, Meet Me Under the Mistletoe.
Tuesday’s program will include varied selections from their CDs, such as “You Got What I Want,” “When Things Go Wrong,” “Down the Road a Piece,” “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” and their distinctive covers for the classics, “Summertime,” “Blue Skies,” “Night and Day,” and “Our Love is Here to Stay.”
Praise for the duo comes from many corners: “Van Deurzen’s voice is warm and soothing, pouring out the lyrics with effortless control.” –Tucson Lifestyles. “Otey’s piano and vocals are hot and steamy; together they blend like a musical cappuccino with extra foam on top.” –Chuck Graham. “Fun stuff from Lisa Otey and Diane Van Deurzen, a great mix of sass, sentimentality and humor.” –Duncan Hudson, KXCI.
