Donald J. Behnke, PhD,
Superintendent Emeritus, Southampton, NY, Public Schools
Canceled – Monday, January 24, 2022,
an ASA Zoom Webinar*
Music is often a team effort – usually a collaboration between friends but sometimes even enemies. Returning to ASA for a new lecture on musical theater, long-time student and patron of the arts Donald Behnke will look at a trio of unusual “Partners in Rhyme,” illustrated with copious musical examples.
The three teams Dr. Behnke will describe include a brother and sister, a man and woman who were friends but not lovers, and two men who came to detest each other while turning out some of the most tuneful and commercially successful operettas in history. Can you guess who they are? If not you’ll have to come to the lecture, which promises to be a fascinating and musically magnificent talk by a former resident of Academy Village who has presented a number of popular lectures for the ASA over the years.
Dr. Behnke, superintendent emeritus of the Southampton, NY, public schools, is a life-long music enthusiast who began piano and voice studies at age five. Currently serving as music critic for the Green Valley News and Sun in southern Pima County, he received the first-place award for arts criticism presented by the Arizona Press Club. Study of the pipe organ at the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago led Dr. Behnke to a number of years as a church organist, and he has played keyboard and trumpet as well as doing vocals with dance bands in the Midwest. He has taught in the graduate schools of DePaul University in Chicago and Long Island University. Dr. Behnke has traveled extensively in Europe, the Far East and southeast Asia and he lectures on luxury ships several times each year. He currently resides in Oro Valley northwest of Tucson.
