The Arizona Senior Academy is participating in the Great Decisions program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA). A different topic is featured each week from February 4 through March 25.

Middle East map 2The second Great Decisions group meeting at the Academy will start at 3:30 pm on Wednesday (Feb. 10), when the topic will be oft-changing alliances and (usually cold-) wars between the many states in the Middle East; Marcia Neugebauer will be the discussion leader.

After watching a short video and hearing a summary of the written material provided by the FPA, the audience will be challenged by questions such as “Is the Sunni-Shi’a divide the cause of or a symptom of the violence in the Middle East?” or “Do you think the system of alliances in the Middle East has brought about more or less stability? Why?” or “What do you see as the outcome of the current alliances and conflicts over the next few years? Or over the long run?”

The weekly format is an introduction to the topic by a volunteer discussion leader, followed by a short video and a group discussion. The FPA provides a briefing book, which contains background information about the current issues together with suggested discussion questions, and a list of further readings. People who have not already purchased the 2016 briefing book through ASA may still do so on line at
